DAYS THAT HISTORY WAS MADE (PART ONE)

Hearts v Kilmarnock ProgrammeKilmarnock are Crowned League Champions

The date was Saturday April 24, 1965 and Scotland's capital city provided the backdrop for Kilmarnock's finest moment with the blue and white shading the maroon of Hearts on that special afternoon.

On that late spring day Kilmarnock Football Club achieved their greatest triumph. At Tynecastle Park, Edinburgh, they accomplished what many thought beyond them by beating Heart of Midlothian 2-0 and by doing so winning the Scottish League Championship.

Kilmarnock had, for the first and only time in their history, won the league.

And the odds were certainly stacked against Killie as they sat two points behind Hearts as they entered the last game of the season away from home. At that time it was still two points for a win and ties were decided on goal average which was calculated by dividing the number of goals scored by the number of goals conceded.

In short Killie had to win by two goals to nil to win the league. And that's just what they did with goals from Davie Sneddon and Brian McIlroy with the Killie boys holding on assisted by a famous last minute save from 'keeper Bobby Ferguson. The final whistle blew and no one with the blue and white celebrated more than manager Willie Waddell who bounded across the Tynecastle turf in a dance of joy.

Killie were the Champions.
